Options for updating kitchen cabinets

If you love your kitchen cabinets, but want to add some interest to the space for very little money and time, consider changing the color of your island.

This has been a popular design element for years and is showing no signs of changing anytime soon.

Available from a wide range of home improvement and design stores, semi-custom kitchen cabinets allow for a great balance between cost, efficiency and custom design. Custom cabinets are created from scratch according to a specific design requested by the customer.

Semi-custom cabinets incorporate stock elements but allow for some customization by the customer.

Stock cabinets come completely designed and assembled "as-is." Each cabinet type has benefits and challenges.

The range of materials, designs, finishes and accessories available is not as broad as entirely custom cabinets, but semicustom cabinets cost less while still allowing more flexibility than stock cabinets.Many refacing options require sanding the surface as well.All cleaned surfaces must be allowed to dry thoroughly.But of course I thought I'd do a bit more research on other custom options and see if there was anything local or Canadian (which doesn't look like the case unless we go custom custom). I just got a huge wave of kitchen inspiration recently after seeing the upgrade of Sarah Sherman Samuel of Smitten Studio's IKEA kitchen cabinets (above). There are rumours that the new system is coming to the USA either fall 2014 or spring 2015 (there aren't any rumours yet about Canada but I would guess it would be fairly quick behind the USA).
