The study of fossils and the exploration of what they tell scientists about past climates and environments on Earth can be an interesting study for students of all ages.Teaching about Earth's history is a challenge for all teachers.For example, based on the primate fossil record, scientists know that living primates evolved from fossil primates and that this evolutionary history took tens of millions of years.By comparing fossils of different primate species, scientists can examine how features changed and how primates evolved through time.Early geologists had no way to determine the absolute age of a geological material. What they could do was determine the ages of materials relative to each other.If they didn’t see it form, they couldn’t know if a rock was one hundred years or 100 million years old. Using sensible principles they could say whether one rock was older than another.

This optimistic hope, however, must be tempered by the realization that much of the record—older than 541 million years—is missing.

In this activity, students begin a sequencing activity with familiar items — letters written on cards.

Once they are able to manipulate the cards into the correct sequence, they are asked to do a similar sequencing activity using fossil pictures printed on "rock layer" cards.

A fossil can be studied to determine what kind of organism it represents, how the organism lived, and how it was preserved.

However, by itself a fossil has little meaning unless it is placed within some context.
